We’ve noticed that Amazon is weird

Of course I’m referring to book shopping, not breast chopping. Today I got this mail from their data-miners:

We’ve noticed that customers who have purchased The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson also purchased books by Jane Wegscheider Hyman.

Hmm, I’d never heard of the “novelist” (I assumed) Jane Wegscheider Hyman, but was amused to read that her book they were pushing on me was I am More Than One: How Women With Dissociative Identity Disorder Have Found Success in Life and Work. Isn’t that kind of like telling people who’ve read Anna Karenina they might be interested in books on marital counselling, or that readers of White Noise by Don DeLillo might be keen on books by Adolf Hitler or the music of Elvis Presley…?

Seems I’m not the only one to extol tenuous connections…

Or maybe Amazon just thought that people that read that kind of book are just madly crazy about mental disorders or have some kind of identity problem. Have you? Are you “loco”? Well, at least your tenuous connections have some dissociative identity disorder….Why? (In fact, I just notice it after reading your post today) Look at the different, tenuous identities that appear in the background of your logo….Is it an omen of your success in life and work? Maybe, you’re just another lucky “loco”…..
But, please not breast chopping, that won’t change you into an Amazon but into a psychopath!!!

  2. Ah! Thanks to your comments, I put the pieces all together… Maybe it isn’t just because of that one book. Maybe they analyzed my whole history of buying and browsing at Amazon (they do indeed do this) and then recommended the book. Maybe I should be reading a whole lot more into this (so to speak) — I really need to buy that book!

On the other hand, maybe I should be looking at this one or this one (oops, I’ve already read that one twice)…

(Now don’t worry about the breast-chopping…I’d be pretty deluded indeed to think that I had much to chop off there!)

What’s with all the apocalyptic / omen business…? Seems to be a theme cropping up repeatedly in recents posts…

Would love to read Don Delillo if I had more time. Let us know! Too bad I can’t comment on your book lists(!).
